Halifax swoons over Stephane Dion

Stephane Dion was in town yesterday. I used to poke fun at his inability to speak the main official language of the country he's aspiring to lead, but I had never actually seen him speak, so perhaps that was unfair of me. I apologize. That being said, I can now express to you, with full confidence and knowledge of what I'm expressing, that Stephane Dion is a terrible, terrible public speaker. Being at a Liberal rally, he was fortunate enough to have the ecstatic crowd cheering at his every almost-english word. During his speech, he said one word in particular again and again. I still am not sure if it was "sound" or "strong." "Canada needs a SOMETHING government." We certainly do.

I like this picture of him, from his speaking engagement at the maritime museum in Halifax, because he looks like such a celebrity, ducking from the camera. And just look at his wife.......! That's good stuff. The music that was playing when he entered the room was fantastic. Heavy beats, catchy tunes...definitely the entrance of a celeb.

The Liberals made a point of saying that Dion would address the public, as Harper didn't do when he was in town. Dion would answer the "tough questions of the public." I was looking forward to that, since Harper really didn't do a Q&A or anything when he was here. Oddly enough, the Liberals lied. (Strange, I know..) Dion didn't answer my tough questions, or anyone elses'.

Although I admit he's rather charismatic in person (in a kind of pathetic way), he didn't steal the show. Prior to his short speech, Bob Rae gave him a super-Harper-bashing introduction that had the crowd howling. Really, either of them could have said anything and the crowd would have drooled along, but the media was all over the Bob Rae stealing the show thing.

Personally I don't think it matters who stole the show, since they're most likely not going to win the election. I'm excited about this election because I get excited about politics in general, but I wish it were a little more suspenseful or eventful or something. The American presidential (and vice-presidential) candidates are like celebrities, while here in the Great White North it's so laissez-faire and predictable. Oh well.

The best part of Dion's speech had to be the following quote:

"...we just have to sing the old song, you know...Be happy. Don't worry."

Cute. (He almost got the lyrics right.) I think he was actually misquoting Harper, but I couldn't really understand. Whatever.

Regardless of whether or not the message is delivered in English or French, adroitly or mangled, the message is still the same: Liberal policies will see the middle class taxed right out of existence along with business of all types and sizes.

He said he would put a "price on pollution." Then he drove away in a HUGE bus with about three people in it. Super.
